When it comes to considering the best type of firewall I’m going to hit on the best for a home network and organizational network, best of both worlds! I believe that Fortinet’s FortiGate Next Generation firewall is the best for a home network. It is a hardware firewall so it is a physical appliance. Just like it says in the name it is an next generation firewall which tells us that it does a great job doing what other firewalls do but on top of that it does a more thorough inspection on the traffic by not only inspecting the header information but also the actual payload (actual content/transmitted data) which provides the user a higher level of protection. The FortiGate next gen firewall also gives the user the option to set their own internet rules, adjust/carry out security policies and lastly gives the user access to view users and devices real time. Another benefit of this firewall is that it doesn’t take away from your internet speed like some other hardware firewalls are known to do. This firewall gives great visibility on what on what’s going on within your networks and provides the user great reports which helps you as a network security specialist adjust and mitigate threats. Whether for a home, small or large business i believe this firewall has it all especially with how it provides a high level security to your system from unwanted threats and malware. Overall a great tool with more incentive than your traditional firewall since it has enhanced SSL inspection, antivirus and spam filtering protocols and best of all it is less complex and user friendly. It is a pricey option when it comes to firewalls but the Pros of this type of firewall make it seem worth it. Go hard or go home!

There are a number of firewalls to choose from, pending upon a persons or a companys needs. There are software firewalls, which are also referred to as a host firewalls. These are programs that are basically installed on a device like any other software. There are hardware firewalls, which as the term references, are an actual appliance. Packet-filtering firewalls are attached to a router and (obviously) filters packets. Circuit-level gateways monitor TCP connections, and usually part of or used with current firewalls. Stateful inspection firewalls monitor TCP 3-way handshakes. Proxy firewalls work as middleman, forwarding requests as if they were their own. And next-generation firewalls combine portions of the previously mentioned firewalls to secure a system/network (Simic, 2020).
Out of all of the firewalls, for an individual, a software firewall is the best. While this type does use a devices memory, it is typically relatively inexpensive and easy to install on a machine. From a security standpoint, while filtering traffic, software firewalls can also identify programs and how those programs are working and can approve access to one program while also blocking access to another. Commercial software firewalls include Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation, WatchGuard, Fortinet, Comodo, Netdefender, TinyWall, and others (TrustRadius, n.d.). Many are free for download, but then have, for lack of a better term, in app purchases to upgrade or improve the software. A drawback to this type, is that if an individual or company has multiple machines, the program has to be purchased for each device. If that is the case, then a person or organization may be better suited to a hardware firewall.
