Hello, please please read everything below.
No sophisticated language, no wordy essay, we need simple language because kids at 18 in a community college don’t know fancy complicated words. The teacher will suspect plagiarism if we use big fancy words. thank you
The essay has to have a strong thesis and conclusion along with clear body paragraphs
It is a 5 page essay.
INTRODUCTION has attention getter/ background info/ thesis with topic, claim, and forecast. indicate the theme you will analyze and how these details connect to hooks & other texts & and why it matters. Do not introduce hooks or supplemental reading authors in your introduction.
BODY PARAGRAPHparagraphs follow the order outlined in the forecast. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence that supports the thesis. Paragraphs start with an original idea which is then supported with evidence/examples. Paragraphs and new ideas begin with transitions. ideas are supported with library database research. sources inform/argue/move the reader to action. 3 Ebscohost sources. (hooks/supp readings used but not in place of Ebscohost
CONCLUSION main ideas are summarized in the order of the forecast. Thesis is restated. Essay ends on a note of closure. Why these topics are important in the novel, in particular communities, and beyond the scope of the novel explained. Avoid use of I, you, me, us, we, our, and society. Did not confuse Alexie the author with Junior, the character.
FORMATTING essay follows MLA guidelines–Times New Roman, 12 pt, double- spaced throughout, header, 1″ margins, left justified margins/ragged right. paragraphs are indented. there are no page long or diminutive paragraphs.
-no I.–review paragraph structure; no contractions ever
–To start, you need to be aware that academic writing is different from other forms of writing because:
–academic writing is formal–third person perspective (no I, i ,you, me, us, we, society, humans, should, need to, it is not fair, disgusting, etc statements)
–focus on logos NOT pathos–no contractions
–need your thesis/claim/forecast NOT a summary of other people’s ideas or general claims
–need evidence from text/research to support your claims (MSJC library databases only)
–each paragraphs need a transition and a topic sentence that focuses on YOUR ideas NOT other people’s ideas. no page long paragraphs. no short paragraphs. no quotes at the start or end–start and end with YOUR ideas.
____________________________________
furthermore, academic writing is different from regular types of writing because:
–you evaluate texts by providing analysis, synthesis, and very little summary
–you focus on HOW a text is organized/ compare/ contrast/ note author’s reliance on pathos/ logos/ ethos
–all of your claims are supported by examples from text and research from library databases
_____________________________________
avoid:
I, i, emotion, response/reaction, we, us, society, humans, I think, I feel, in my opinion, honestly, should, must, it is not fair, it is disgusting, need to statements = pathos
***opinions are rhetorical dead ends; a strong thesis statement is arguable and provides both topic plus YOUR claims with a forecast to organize the essay and serve to open discussions/explore topics
Also, you will be reading Sherman Alexie The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian who discusses racial and economic oppression on a Native American reservation. You will analyze not just what Alexie argued but HOW in order to help you with your own writing. After reading, you are ready to write an essay that focuses on a topic Alexie brings up: alcoholism, racism, oppression, eating disorders, etc. First you will analyze how Alexie develops one of these themes then connect the novel to hooks and one supplemental reading to show how different texts can cover the same topic in different ways. Part two of essay 4 asks for you to research your chosen topic to see what other authors have to say on this topic. Rather than a collection of summaries or pointing out issues, you will argue how these different texts handle tough topics. Avoid use of “I, me, we, you, us, and society.”
Learning Objectives for this essay: present an organized essay supported by assigned texts and research that has a clear thesis regarding Alexie’s use of humor in dealing with serious topics. Remember to edit, revise, and proofread often.
Begin by analyzing key scenes in the novel that support your thesis regarding Alexie’s use of humor. With research support from the library databases, you will argue how humor is or is not an effective rhetorical strategy.
