Writing Response

Answer each of the following in 100 words.

Consider the role religion, specifically Catholicism, plays in “The Plague of Doves.” For instance, references are made to the season of Lent leading up to Easter and to Mooshum’s brother being a priest. Does this religious backdrop directly impact what the narrator tells us or what she seems to care about?

What is the effect of “Praise him” (11)? Does “Pied Beauty” lead to expect such an ending?

Read “God’s Grandeur” silently and then read it again aloud. It may also be helpful to listen to the recorded version linked in this folder. What stands out to you upon hearing the poem aloud? (pay special attention to his use of alliteration, assonance, anaphora, and parallelism; look in the Glossary of our textbook for help with these terms) You may also compare these poetic elements to another one of his poems that we read this week, if desired.

Discuss the picture of the narrator “Dandelion Insomnia” allows you to form. Consider word choice, voice (tone), and the use of symbolism in your response.

  • Select one of your answers from the Writing Response and incorporate 3-4 quotes from the text to support your ideas. Review the information presented in A Writer’s Reference with Exercises (Diana Hacker; Nancy Sommers) for how to integrate and cite your sources correctly. (MLA). Then, include a Works Cited page (hint: to cite your piece, you should reference OWL at Purdue’s example for citing a work within an anthology. The essayist/poet should be listed first).
  • Select what you feel is the weakest paragraph from your Week 4 essay (Attached) and rewrite it to make it stronger. Your paragraph must contain at least 5-7 sentences (more is fine) and you must rewrite each sentence. Include both your old and new paragraph in your submission–please clearly label each paragraph. Then, write a summary of 100 words explaining what changes you made and how you feel these strengthen your argument or writing.
  • Write a one-page analysis of your writing development from this term. Consider which areas you feel you have grown the most and which areas you would like to continue developing. What tactics could you use to help develop those areas? (Struggling with formatting) (Lack of interest in the poetry) (Unable to see connections between the poems) (I need to find more time to spend doing the work).
