FOR THIS CURRENT ASSIGNMENT
-I only need a thesis statement for right now and a rough copy of the whole assignment, but I need you to give me a thesis statement. I will be requesting you to write the full essay for this in about a week. Using “The Grilled Cheese Sandwich” analogy, this is your “menu description” which introduces your reader to the concept that you will analyze. The statement should be at least one sentence long, and it must include the name of the work(s) being analyzed and the functions of mythology you are examining. The statement should be focused and specific (type of cheese, how prepared, what sides).
Purpose:
The primary aims of this assignment are to assess your ability to analyze literature through cultural and symbolic lenses and to assess your ability to utilize textual evidence to support your claim. The secondary aim is to provide you with an opportunity to work through a structured writing process from ideation to polished final copy. The writing process will include both individual and collaborative group work.
Prompt:
The conflict with the monsters (i.e. the other/the supernatural element/the weird) in supernatural horror are often mirrorsmanifestations of very real societal and cultural fears. Viewed in this way, the monsters become timeless, mythological figures. They serve a purpose within the world of the story, within the context of the time they were written, and within the world of the current reader.
Select one story that we have read. Create a well-structured and supported essay which analyzes how the story serves 2 (two) of the four functions of mythology. That is, how does the story provide us (the reader) with a sense of awe and wonder at the world (Mystical), explain natural phenomena (Cosmological), validate and maintain a societal order (Sociological), and/or teach us how to live a happy and fulfilled life (Pedagogical).
Your analysis should examine characters (including the monster), themes, and structure of the story to support your claim.
