Many fire departments have multiple apparatus with various types of pumps and pumping capabilities. As you have seen in this unit, apparatus and pumps operate in similar, but also different, manners. For this project, your focus is to create a training tool for your department’s members who are not familiar with the department’s apparatus and apparatus pumps. You can think of this process as creating a training tool for new driver/operators.
To complete this project, you will need to take pictures of one apparatus in your department that has a pump. If you are not a current member of a fire department, access a local fire department to gather information about a pumping apparatus. The training tool must be completed in the form of a PowerPoint presentation using a recorded voiceover as if you were giving the presentation to a group in your department. Review the Adding Audio to a PowerPoint guide for directions on how to do this. The presentation must be a minimum of 8 slides and include the following information:
- an introduction slide with side view picture of the apparatus;
- various mechanical components such as the engine, transmission, etc.;
- fluids used in the apparatus;
- pump controls and discharges;
- detailed pump information—make a specific note if this is a similar, same, or different style pump from the other apparatus in your department’s fleet;
- equipment carried; and
- any special knowledge aspects about the apparatus.
If you do not have access to or the ability to complete the voiceover aspect of the presentation, you may include a detailed script of the verbal presentation you would give during the training session (this would go in the notes section of each PowerPoint slide). This is only an option granted on a case-by-case basis by contacting your professor.
If outside sources are used, please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment. APA formatting, however, is not necessary.
If you are currently not a member of a fire department and/or cannot access a local fire department to gather information about a pumping apparatus, you may contact your professor for an alternate assignment.
