Essay

Think of a teacher you had sometime between kindergarten and graduating high school that made a positive impact on your learning or your life. This can be a teacher you had in school or someone who taught an extra curricular class, activity, or sport. Write 4 sentences on what you remember about that teacher.

Now getting a bit more specific, list 3 things this teacher did that contributed to them being a positive impact on your learning or your life. My favorite teacher in middle school held a poetry club in her classroom at lunch time and created a safe place for many of us who did not feel safe elsewhere.

Lastly, write 4-6 sentences on how schools and communities could support more teachers doing the sorts of things that the teacher you thought of had done. How could we incentivize these important behaviors? How could we train teachers to respond to students in these supportive ways? What barriers exist to teachers being able to do the types of things that were memorably supportive for you?
