Your city is considering host a major event. You can select the event, but it should be on the scale of the Super Bowl, the Olympics, a political convention, and so on. For your initial post, craft an argument from the perspective of the mayor’s office in support of having your city host this event. Address logistics from an intergovernmental perspective (e.g., cooperation, fiscal models, profits, security, transportation). Apply the funding concepts discussed in this module.
As Mayor, I have an exciting announcement to make. After careful consideration, my office is endorsing hosting the State’s Political Convention in June 2023, where the focus will be on setting policy and long-term strategy for the organization. I am excited that our city has the opportunity to shine and showcase all we have to offer. This event will bring economic stimulus to our local businesses, including but not limited to lodging, restaurants, shopping and all other amenities.
This event is perfect to showcase our community and all we have to offer. However, a lot of work has to be done up front to prepare and plan. With that in mind I am establishing a task force to handle logistics, scheduling and supporting the overall effort. Our community planner, emergency management and economic development directors will take the lead working with local chamber of commerce, police and fire chiefs, local business owners and community liaisons. The core team will organize and create an overarching strategic plan to accommodate this large event. Research indicates, “conventions play a much greater, more dynamic role as convention and visitors bureaus collaborate with local governments, economic development agencies, academic and scientific institutions, local business improvement districts and others to accelerate economic development and drive innovation” (Johnson, 2017). Upmost of importance will be the safety and security of our community during this time.
From an intergovernmental perspective we will work with all state and federal agencies to ensure the event is meeting all operational standards. This includes transportation agencies, election division of the secretary of state, state police association partnering with local officials to ensure proper planning and care goes into hosting the event. From a fiscal and revenue perspective we will be looking at local, state and federal funding that can be used to offset expenses. Further we will be leveraging private sponsorships to offset any additional cost to the community. We are planning to move at pace to cover any security and infrastructure cost associated with hosting this event. Our Community & Economic Director will have a primary focus on identifying funding resources and grant programs that will assist with all needed upgrades to accommodate this event. The focus will be on hosting a successful event that highlights all we have to offer in this great community.

In your responses to classmates, craft rebuttals from another point of view (e.g., a governmental or nongovernmental agency). Challenge the logistics from an intergovernmental perspective put forth in the initial posts.
For your response posts, do the following:
Write a Post 1 to 2 paragraph
Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in the discussion prompt.
Consider content from other parts of the course where appropriate. Use proper citation methods for your discipline when referencing scholarly or popular sources.
