The most significant self-sustaining systems depend on stakeholder interactions and contributions. One must actively investigate the influencing systems to comprehend the broader scope of individual stakeholder goals and develop scalable solutions for sustainability (Dzombak et al., 2014). Hillebrand et al. (2015) recognize that firms cannot wholly understand value creation by isolating one group of stakeholders, but it occurs when the value of all stakeholders is considered. Co-creation of value, more recently, considers value configurations of social actors interacting and exchanging knowledge across networks (Frow & Payne, 2011). Historically, the primary goal of value creation was centered on a company’s output, sales, price, and revenue.
Nevertheless, for systems to be self-sustaining, firms must combine two schools of thinking, service, and governance. Simply put, all systems rely on other systems or subsystems to maximize and perform their objectives. Trust, learning, and adaptation in value systems entail effective communication and knowledge sharing among all stakeholder groups. This knowledge is relevant for self-sustaining systems dependent on stakeholder interactions and contributions.

A system operates effectively when all pieces come together as perfect fit. Organizations are like a well-oiled engine that responds to increases and decreases in speed, depending on the operator (the driver). The organization is the driver and its operations are only as good as the organization’s response to signals and following through of activities. In this sense, organizations and their stakeholders share value, where involvement is active in terms of collaboration and innovation and organization and stakeholder equally benefit (Chaurasia et al., 2020). Managing the intensity and application of operations is not an easy task and organizations look to their stakeholders to lend a hand.
All stakeholders perform the work, contribute by sharing information, or have experience and/or resources that ultimately reach the end goal. One way that stakeholders interact with organizational systems is contributing to the sustainability of knowledge. Stakeholders are accountable to the guidance of the application of shared value (Chaurasia et al., 2020) and so have a different perspective of the what, when, where, and how organizational activities take place. Stakeholders also initiate and contribute to positive change within the system (Laur & Danilovic, 2020). Stakeholders, from a change perspective, are mediators of what can or should be based on experience and knowledge.
These interactions are significant, in my opinion, because they keep the organization from tunnel vision (thinking of Blockbuster). Diverse perspectives cater to open innovation (Chaurasia et al., 2020) and various stakeholders understand needs and requirements of change better than the organization (Laur & Danilovic, 2020).

Stakeholders’ most extensive contributions to the interactions within the organization are through a participatory approach in dealing with the systems and processes within the organization. According to Duboz et al. (2018), organizations have critical stakeholders involved in the definition and descriptions of the environment, threat assessments, sustentation, alleviation, and being malleable to strategies that will improve the day-to-day operations. Organizations have processes that can be used when tame problems habitually arise. They understand that the interrelationship processes are seen through macro-lens. Systems thinking within the context of an organization is seeing it as a whole and not in parts. They understand the complexities of the total, how the processes of the organization, and how the praxis of the organizational culture is conducted. The stakeholder can contribute a wide range of activities, from technical support to conceptual ideas (Kordova et al., 2018). Systems thinking is not just a linear way of thinking; it is much more holistic and consistent with reductionist, critical, and creative thinking. Organizations that have diverse methods of thinking will be beneficial in long-term sustainability.
