To combine knowledge of social support to develop an intervention, a provision of resources and support to help alcoholics stay on course with their sobriety. This include access to support, weekly check-ins, and resources for managing triggers and cravings with the goal of helping alcoholics abstain gradually. Quitting alcohol or detoxing is a strenuous engagement involving various factors. Ceasing instantaneously may be dangerous if an individual is dependent on alcohol miseuse.
A brief intervention would be recommended which is concerned with raising the issue in a non-confrontational and supportive manner that provides individual/patient with the assurance and encouragement that they need in order to reflect on their alcohol use and modify their drinking behavior if necessary. Individuals who succeed at making small changes generally return for more success.
Preceived and received social support are both important in the context of alcohol sobriety. Perceived support refers to the individual’s belief about the availability of support from others, while received social support refers to the actual support that individual receives from others. Technology plays a role in both these forms of social support, providing a way for people to connect with others online who are going through similar experiences and who can offer support and advice.
Web-base or computer interventions have shown to be effective in reducing drinking behavior, particularly among young, high-risk drinkers and the general population. It is important to select communication strategies and channels that would be effective for each group. For example, face-to-face communication may be more effective for some groups, while others may prefer communication via text or online.
Social marketing techniques have been used in an effort to counter the impact of commercial marketing of alcohol. Social marketing technique is intented to deliver value in order to influence target audience behavior that benefit society as well as the target audience. It is important to consider the particular needs of each group when applying social marketing techniques as the goal is to reach the target audience that will most likely result in the desired behavior change.

Social support groups are used to provide emotional support to individuals whom experience emotions such as loneliness, depression, anxiety or sadness. These social groups help to provide assistance and resources to these individuals and help to guide them back into a healthier lifestyle that steers away from using substance abuse such as alcohol or drugs. The best intervention to recommend for alcoholics trying to maintain sobriety would be a social support raising the alcoholism issue to the individual in a non-confrontational and supportive manner that provides the individual with encouragement and assurance that they need to reflect on their behaviors and reflect on their alcohol intake. It is important that the social support group is using expressions of compassion, empathy, love, trust and care towards the individual. This social support will encourage the individual’s likelihood to seek for help and utilize community resources that are available. These resources will provide informational support, emotional support and appraisal.
