Part 1: Biology Lab

Check:

1. “The set morphological characteristics of any given animal reflects its habitat environmental pressures.” (One paragraph)

a. Explain whether you agree or disagree

b. Provide examples (at least three) to illustrate your point.

2. From insects to birds, all flying organisms share some morphological similarities. In a short paragraph (One paragraph)

a. Explain their main similarity and why?

3. Despite the several advantages of flying, some birds have evolved flightless. According to the video, “Why can’t some birds fly?” by Gillian Gibb (Duration 04:31) (One paragraph)

a. What other adaptations have evolved in this group that explains their flightless condition?

b. Can you think of others; provide examples

4. First, gather six similar containers where you can collect as much as 500 mL of freshwater. Fill up three of them with 100 mL each and the other three with 500 mL each. Place the six containers in the freezer and let them freeze for 24 hours. Once frozen, expose all the containers to sunlight (or another source of heat) simultaneously.

a. Record the starting time (once the containers leave the freezer) and the final time (once the ice has completely melted). (One paragraph)

i. 100ml (Three  containers)

ii. 500ml (Three  containers)

b. Calculate the melt time for each ice cube.

i. 100ml (Three  containers)

ii. 500ml (Three  containers)

c. Calculate the average melt time for each treatment group (100 mL ice cubes vs. large 500 mL ice cubes) for comparison.

i. 100ml (Three  containers)

ii. 500ml (Three  containers)

5. Applying your point 4  results to explain (One paragraph)

a. Why, in general, smaller species have a higher basal metabolic rate (BMR) than larger ones.

6. Based on the Skulls of a lion, wolf, and Florida panther (One paragraph)

a. Describe their diet

b. Describe their sensory capabilities (proportions and directionality of eyes, nose, etc.)

c. Describe any other characteristic

Check:

7. What two pieces of evidence are used from the embryos in the video to suggest organisms have a common ancestor? (One paragraph)

8. What feature distinguishes a modern human skull from skulls of earlier hominids? (One paragraph)

9. Compare analogous, homologous, and vestigial structures. Provide two examples of each (One paragraph)
