GNED 101 – Writing Assignment – Analyzing A Quote
Essay Instructions:
Your essay should be at least 600-700 words long (3 pages double spaced). Answer the questions below in essay format (introduction, body, and conclusion). Don’t include question numbers or bullet points in your writing assignment. You do not need to re-write the questions in your writing assignment. You can use “I” (write in the first person).
- QUOTE:
Choose one passage from one assigned reading you found most interesting and intriguing. You will be expected to include at least one quote from one of the assigned reading in your essay. Write your quote at the beginning of your assignment in quotation marks with APA citation. Provide some explanation of which reading the quote is from, who the author is, and what unit the reading is from. The quote should be a minimum of one sentence long, and no longer than 3 sentences.
- WHY?:
Why did you choose this quote? Explain. Is the material in the quote new to you? Is it something you already knew? How does this quote help you learn more about the topic in the assigned reading the quote is from? How does this quote influence how you understand the course material? Does this quote answer the unit question the reading is from?

- CONTEXT:
Is this quote related to a controversial topic? Does it challenge or critique societal norms, or human behavior? Does this quote demonstrate beliefs/ideas held in Canada, or in your social circle? How does this quote explain historical events, or historical problems?

- CONCLUDING OPINION:
Would you share this quote with a friend in order to educate them on the topic related to this quote? Why or why not? Did you find this quote to be a fair and true representation of the topic it is discussing? Explain and provide specific reasons that justify your opinion.
Include a Bibliography (Reference Page)
You are expected to properly cite the quote you choose, using the APA citation style format. You will also need to include a Reference page at the end of your essay (on its own page) that provides the full citation for the reading(s) you chose to use for your essay. Only use the course readings. Do not use other sources for this writing assignment. Do not use websites such as Wikipedia or other websites that anyone can create and edit.

The 20% for this assignment will be graded as follows:
- 13 marks: for the content of the essay, the quality of your answer, providing a complete and detailed answer.
- 7 marks: for grammar, sentence structure, readability, the use of a quote from one assigned reading used in our course, citation for the quote and the list of references used.
