M5:L2 | Research Paper Requirements

Sample Structure:

  1. Your Perspective (2 pages)

    • Explain your position on the issue and what points support your stance.  Be sure to incorporate secondary sources from the MDC Database. Do not write in the first person. Use only third-person point of view. Include information from credible sources (no dot coms, encyclopedias, or Wikipedia) and cite the sources in the text of the essay.
  2. The Other Perspective (2 pages)

    • Consider the other side of the issue and what are the counter-points.  Also, be sure to incorporate secondary sources from the MDC Database. Include information from credible sources (not dot coms, encyclopedias, or Wikipedia) and cite the sources in the text of the essay.
  3. Rebuttal (1-2 pages)

    • This is where you directly address the counter-points from the other perspective. Explain why the other position (opposite of yours) is illogical or not feasible.
  4. Your Final Conclusion(1 page)

    • Your conclusion is where you make your final point.  Be sure to revisit your introduction here and give a final, powerful thought.

Total: 6 to 7 pages plus 1 page for the MLA Works Cited

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Organization – Use your analytical skills in organizing the essay in the appropriate rhetorical structure.
  • Content – Include appeals to your audience (ethos, pathos, logos) and the logical aspects of the argument.  Include an appropriate introduction to the issue which thoroughly explains it as well as a conclusion that summarizes your major points.
  • Style – Use formal style (no first [I, me, my, us, we] or second-person [you, your] perspective.)
  • Support & Development – The essay must be an argument and include the opposing viewpoint as well as a rebuttal (reasons the opposing position isn’t feasible). It also must include evidence from credible sources to support the points you make.
  • Grammar & Mechanics – The essay must be readable and free of mechanical errors. (Grammarly can help with this.)
