Identifying Single-Subject Experimental Designs(SSED) in Peer-Reviewed Research Articles

Objective:

You will be able to identify the SSED in 6peer reviewed research articles

STEP 1:  Review this basic definition and rationale

RATIONALE: For you to be able to critically analyze the merit of a research study, it is important for you to identify the single subject experimental design used in the article.  . Experimental design means planning a set of procedures to investigate a relationship between variables. That is, do the results of this study show that there was a functional relationship between the independent and dependent variable?

In this course, we have covered the following designs:

  • Multiple baseline
  • Multiple-probe design
  • Multi element (also called) alternating treatment
  • ABAB reversal
  • Changing criterion
  • Combination design (combination of 1 or more of above designs)

STEP 2: Watch this video on single – subject design, and then answer the 5 questions that follow:

  1. With single subject experimental design individual serve as their own:
    1. Independent variable
    2. Design
    3. Control
    4. Predictor
  2. This is a graph demonstrating what type of design?

  1. Multiple baseline
  2. Multielement
  3. ABAB design
  4. Anecdotal case study

  1. This is a graph demonstrating what type of design?

  1. Multiple-probe design
  2. Multiple-baseline design
  3. Multiple behavior design
  4. Staggered-treatment design
  1. This is a graph demonstrating what type of design?

  1. Alternating treatment design
  2. A-B design
  3. Multi-element design
  4. Both a and c are correct
  1. This is a graph demonstrating what type of design?

  1. Changing-criterion design
  2. Changing phase design
  3. Multiple-phase design
  4. Both a and b are correct

Step 3 Now, let’s practice.  Let’s look at 10 peer-reviewed applied behavior analysis article using SSED’s,  and identify the design used in each study.

HINT:  the design in the article can be found in one or more of the possible locations.  Not all articles State the design in all of these locations, however these are the places to look:

  • The abstract
  • A section in the methods labeled Experimental Design
  • This can often be quickly identified by looking at the graphs displayed in the study.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:
