1. Guernica

Using complete sentences, create a list and describe in detail Picasso’s Guernica. What is the historical context of this work? Why do you think Picasso chose black & white for this very large oil painting? Why do you think he included text-like markings? It is not mentioned in our book, but what are some ways we might interpret the eye/light bulb-looking symbol at the top near the center of the painting?

2. The Americas

Turning our sights to the Americas during this time period. In Mexico, the Aztec civilization wasn’t conquered by the Spanish until 1521 and the Inka civilization wasn’t conquered by the Spanish until 1532.  Both cultures are fascinating and both cultures had very distinct styles of art before and during the conquest. Using complete sentences, create a list: Choose either the Inka or Aztec culture and discuss, using specific examples (e.g. names), their artwork. Focus in on one specific type of art such as architecture, sculpture, painting, weaving, ceramics, etc.

3. If it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it

Using complete sentences, create a list and define the Baroque style of art. What were its visual characteristics? Name two artists whose works exemplify Baroque art and use their work to help you describe the Baroque stylistic period.

4. Modern Art

Using complete sentences, create a list and explain just what is modern about Modern art? Distinguish the difference between Modern and Contemporary art. Provide two specific examples of Modern art, describe it, and explain why they are “modern.”
