Health Studies 300 MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN DYING (MAID)
Research Assignment(10% of your final grade)due
Since 2016, 30,000 Canadians have died with medical assistance. In 2021 alone, some 10,000 people have used MAID, a number that accounts for more than 3% of the total deaths in the country that year. The objective of MAID is to balance respect for the autonomy of individuals while at the same time protecting the vulnerable.
In 2023, the federal government plans to further broaden the criteria for MAID to include mental illness and to allow “mature minors” to have access to MAID.
In recent months, the plan to expand MAID has come under criticism by some members of the mental health community and because of reports that poverty and the health care crisis (exacerbated by Covid) have driven some to request the procedure. Some, including a New York Times OP ED have called the expansion of MAID in Canada “barbaric” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/03/opinion/canada-euthanasia.html
As mentioned in class, I would like everyone to either attend Dr. Lillian Thorpe’s Lecture “Medical Assistance in Dying: An Aging Population and End of Life Choices” (La CITE 215 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16th) or watch the recording for those who cannot attend. I am hoping that you will all have done enough research on this issue to be an informed member of the audience and to ask good questions of Dr. Thorpe.
For Tuesday, Feb. 28th, I would like you all to have written an eight page (double-spaced) essay on the current discussions surrounding the expansion of the MAID framework. I would like a title page, in text citations and a reference page(s). I would like you to take a stand on whether you feel the proposed expansion of MAID will improve health in Canada. (I am leaving the definition of “health” to you). Good Luck!
just so we are all clear and “on the same page” I would like 8 pages of writing along with a title page and reference page in official APA style please. I want your papers to be as sophisticated as possible, so I’m going to let you know about any others thatare relevant.

Remember, talk to your friends and family about MAID so see what their opinions are, I want us to consider as many views of the issue as possible next Tuesday.
