Impact on the Community or State

The utilization of illicit substances, especially among minors and young adults, has a noteworthy effect on both local communities and entire states. Excessive screen time has been found to result in a variety of adverse outcomes, including but not limited to compromised physical and mental well-being, hindered cognitive growth, suboptimal academic achievement, heightened likelihood of engaging in delinquent behavior, and strained interpersonal connections (Abuse, 2020). Moreover, it imposes a weighty responsibility on healthcare systems, law enforcement, and social services. The prevalence of illicit drug consumption among young individuals in my locality/state has been escalating, resulting in a surge of drug-related criminal activities, hospitalizations, and a general deterioration of the health status of the affected populace.

Population-Based Intervention Model

The Population-Based Intervention Model posits three distinct intervention categories to mitigate the behavioral risk factor of illicit substance use among minors and young adults. These interventions function at distinct phases and aim at diverse facets of the matter. The intervention strategies can be categorized into three levels: downstream, midstream, and upstream (Leischow et al., 2000). The downstream intervention primarily concentrates on treating and recovering individuals affected by substance use. The midstream intervention targets substance use prevention among populations at a higher risk of developing addiction. Lastly, the upstream intervention addresses the underlying determinants of substance use to promote a healthier community with reduced substance use. A comprehensive strategy is employed to tackle illicit substance abuse in minors by implementing interventions throughout all three stages.

Justification

Every intervention is efficacious as it tackles the predicament of illicit substance utilization at diverse phases and focuses on distinct facets of the problem. The intervention targeting the downstream phase is centered on providing assistance and resources to individuals already engaged in substance use to aid them in their recovery and treatment efforts to overcome addiction. The midstream intervention approach prioritizes preventative measures for populations at a higher risk of substance use. This involves imparting knowledge and abilities to decrease the probability of starting or intensifying substance use (Leischow et al., 2000). The intervention implemented upstream targets the underlying factors that contribute to the prevalence of illicit drug consumption. Its goal is to establish a societal and communal milieu that discourages the use of drugs. Adopting interventions throughout the three stages constitutes a comprehensive strategy to address the behavioral risk factor of illicit drug use among minors, thereby enhancing the likelihood of achieving positive outcomes and fostering healthier societies.
