Purpose
To present instructions to a specific audience using a memorandum format
Assignment
Write a one- to two-page memorandum in which you provide instructions to a specific audience determined by you (cannot be your instructor) for any of the following tasks:
- Making a bed
- Brushing your teeth
- Lifting weights (beginner)
- Changing oil or tires (beginner)
- Changing a diaper
- Doing a yoga move
- Administering the Heimlich maneuver
Audience
Your instructor will always be one of your audiences, but, in this case, she will be your secondary audience. You must determine your primary audience, and identify that audience on the first line of your heading (the “To” or “Memorandum For” line).
Constraints
Whether you write in first, second, or third person will be determined by your audience and the type of instructions you choose to provide. This should be typed and in memorandum format, as described on pages 115-119. Remember to utilize white space, and keep your message simple and easy to read. Instructions should begin with forward-moving, directive verbs.
