Paragraph Unity and Development

Read the paper and identify the main idea in each paragraph, and answer the following questions:

  1. Are there any sentences that don’t seem to relate to the main idea?

 

  1. What words or phrases are used to signal transitions or connections between ideas?

 

For each paragraph:

  1. Do any paragraphs need to be broken up because it’s dealing with two or more main ideas?

 

  1. Do any paragraphs need more connecting words or phrases to make links between ideas clearer?

 

 

  1. Do any paragraphs need more material or information to fully develop and support the idea?

 

 

Incorporating Source Material

Read the paper looking carefully at all quotations, paraphrases and summaries of source material. Then answer the following questions.

For all quotations:

  1. Do they make sense?

 

  1. Are they necessary?

 

  1. What is the reason for quoting?

 

  1. Do they belong here?

 

  1. Do they flow smoothly? Are they correctly built into the grammar of the sentence?

 

  1. Are the punctuation rules followed?

 

  1. Are they documented correctly?

 

For all paraphrases and summaries:

  1. Do they sound like the author’s own words? (In other words, is the paraphrase too close to the original; does it need to use less of the original language?)

 

  1. Do they make sense?

 

  1. Are they necessary?

 

  1. Is the information provided complete?

 

  1. Do you feel the need to see the author’s exact words?

 

  1. Do they belong there?

 

  1. Do they flow smoothly? Are they grammatically correct? (This may also indicate too much dependence on the language of the original.)

 

  1. Are they documented correctly? Do you use MLA Citation? Do you have a Works Cited page? MLA CITATION

 

  1. What paragraphs could use a direct quote, paraphrase or summary of a source to better support its points?
