Unit 6 Assignment: Reflection on Digital Media & Relationships

Attached Files:

Refer to the attached document for complete details and grading rubric.

Overview:

This week you will complete your reflective assignment by thinking about what you’ve learned in your textbook readings and the unit resources.

In Chapter 7 of your textbook, titled “Communication in Personal Relationships,” Julia T. Wood writes how digital media has impacted friendships and personal relationships. Today, face-to-face communication is often replaced or preceded by communication via a device. People meet friends and romantic partners online; texting and instant messaging has replaced phone calls and in-person conversations. Social media is part of our social lives.

Instructions:

For this reflective assignment, answer the following questions:

  • How has digital media affected your relationships?
  • Does it enhance or inhibit connections with others?

Requirements:

  • The assignment should be reflective of your personal thoughts and experiences and do not require citations or incorporation of unit resources or materials.
  • This assignment should be one double-spaced page and does not require APA references or a cover page.
  • Because this is a reflective assignment, your grade will be based on completion rather than content quality.

Topic One: Literature sources for this unit:
  • O. Henry uses the symbolism of Christmas gifts to denote what the true meaning of love could be. A classic tale written in 1905, The “Gift of the Magi” is an excellent way to look at symbolism in a short story.
  • Alice Walker, the famed writer of The Color Purple, shares how important and haunting a family heirloom can be.
Topic Two: Symbolism as a literary device:

Literary symbols enable the reader to delve deeper into the theme of a piece of literature.

  • When you are viewing a film, how do you recognize the symbolism that the screenwriter and director put there for your understanding?

Supplemental Resources: Graphic Fiction (not required reading, but fun!)

Graphic Fiction is a mesmerizing genre of literature that incorporates animation in both fiction and nonfiction venues. Often graphic novels are part of an anthology; many of these novels have become successful movies and television series. Graphic fiction is able to take the reader to a place that photos, film, and words cannot.

  • Scholatic.com offers this teacher’s guide to the important critical reading, thematic, and word choice skills that can be learned from graphic fiction:
  • If you have never read/viewed graphic artistry, please take the time to look at the Graphic Fiction section of your literature book as well as the TED talk by Michael Chaney.
