1-Pythagorean Theorem

In the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, upon being presented with a Th.D. (Doctor of Think ology), the Scarecrow proudly exclaims, “The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side.” Did the Scarecrow get the Pythagorean Theorem right? In particular, describe the four errors in the Scarecrow’s statement.

2- Measures of Central Tendency

A student’s parents promise to pay for next semester’s tuition if an A average is earned in math. With examination grades of 97%, 97%, 75%, 70%, and 55%, the student reports that an A average has been earned. Which measure of central tendency is the student reporting as the average? How is this student misrepresenting the course performance with statistics?
