Nursing Discussion 3
Question:
As a nurse, you may often feel as if you’re expected to handle everything that comes your way. But as much as you may want to, it’s just not realistic. There’s only so much you can do in a day, and trying to take on too much too often can quickly lead to fatigue and burnout. That’s why it’s crucial that you learn how to delegate tasks early on in your nursing career
Are there tasks or functions in your work environment that you believe are redundant, unnecessary, or repetitive or that could be delegated to another employee? Is delegation being used appropriately in your work environment? If so give examples, if it is not how could delegation be improved in your facility?

There are definitely tasks that can be delegated, but the issue I run into is that there is usually no one to delegate tasks to. I work nights and oftentimes we only have 1 tech and no janitorial services. Therefore, we are left to clean and assemble rooms, do all lab work, start all IVs, etc. Additionally, rooms are supposed to be stocked by us at the end of our shift, but that almost never happens. Inevitably, we are left running back and forth to the supply rooms for basic supplies. To make matters more complicated, our unit is under construction at the moment and most rooms do not have working computers or scanners and the monitors do not connect to the observation screens at the station. So much time is wasted tracking down working computers/scanners and supplies. If we had extra hands available to help perform these tasks, it would be such a timesaver.

Working in the NICU some neonates are NPO and receiving TPN to sustain their nutritional needs while others feed every three hours by bottle. When neonates get to the state in their hospitalization where they are eating all of their feeds through a bottle its a great step towards going home. Feeding a baby isn’t unnecessary and is important to the growth of the child but when the child’s parents aren’t at the bedside to bottle feed this responsibility falls on the nurse. But, as a nurse with 2-3 patients taking the time to bottle feed kiddos who are just figuring out how to bottle feed may not be setting any speed records, this can eat up quite a bit of time during assessments. Bottle feeding patients is a task that is often delegated to student nurse techs ( who are scheduled on occasion) or other nurses who are available to lend a hand whenever a nurse has a busy assignment. Delegating a bottle feed can free up about 45 minutes for the nurse to pass meds, perform other assessments or catch up on charting.

The paragraph I have chosen is a sample of Persuasive writing. The audience of the paragraph are single or divorced individuals who might not be considering marriage at all or ever again. In the paragraph the author expresses the importance that marriage can hold in our health status therefore that would be considered the subject of the paragraph. The author organizes his writing by stating different risk factors that are proven to be lowered by being married. The writer then uses a very eloquent tone in my perspective. Meaning, he/she express clearly the risk factors that being married can lower in our health life. The author also seems to want to emphasize the quote provided by writing it in bold. He/She most likely wants to emphasize the quote because it is what he/she uses to PROVE scientifically their point that marriage is still important. The author is obviously trying to convince the reader to get married for a better life overall. After reading the paragraph and analysis, is marriage something you want in your future? Did it shift your opinion one bit if if you weren’t considering marriage?
