I think I work best under transformational leadership because this is leadership that inspires and motivates others. I feel I will do my best when I am motivated and inspired by others. This can go for anything in life. If you don’t have any inspiration or motivation, how will you accomplish your tasks, or goals. If you see positivity and goal-oriented people working around you, it only makes you want to be like them. I think when managers motivate their employees, the employees create a vision that they want to fulfil, this can lead to higher work morale and a better work environment.
- I think my current manager uses both transformational and shared leadership. Definitely transformational because they want us to see the bigger picture of an organization providing high quality care rather than just a one person, a nurse, caring for your patients. I also think my manager uses transformational leadership because they are constantly motivating us and pushing us to become better nurses. In ways like climbing clinical ladder and becoming certified in our specialty. In addition, she uses shared leadership because they want us to all become leaders in our unit. We are each accountable for what we do and we each our responsible for our performance. There is not one leader, but many leaders. We are all managers of our care we provide our patients.
- Nurse managers need to understand their leadership style because they need to know if it is working or not for the nursing staff. They need to know if will help contribute to the organization’s goals and objectives. Nurse managers also need to understand their leadership style because they are in a position overlooking the entire unit. They need to be remodels for the nursing staff. If they are not understanding of this and seem off or not well put together or organized, the nursing unit may also become like this.

I work best under transformational leadership because it makes the people motivated and inspired to work. It fosters open communication and leads to boosted morale. The transformational leadership engages employees to strengthen teamwork. This method of leadership works best for me and most others would agree they prefer it.
- What leadership style best describes your present or former managers?
My present manager is a transformational leader and she wears it well. The manager above her, who is the director of nursing, is somewhat punitive and harsh. She uses strict techniques and is transactional in manner. The DON wants to know what you can do for her. At times I am rather fearful of her and she shapes a “blame” culture.
- Why is it important for nurse managers to have a clear understanding of their predominant leadership style?
It is important for nurse managers to know where they are in their leadership style because they must note their strengths and weaknesses. A nurse manager may also integrate other styles of leadership when they are needed for effectiveness. Nurse managers must assess the staff and anticipate their needs and what management style works best for the team.
