I enjoyed reading your fact sheet on obsessive-compulsive disorder. I had experiences with students that were diagnosed with OCD. Some obsessive traits were washing hands, counting objectives repeatedly, and rearranging their supplies on their desk. This affected their learning by focusing on their repetition and thoughts. To accommodate these learners, I gave additional time with assignments and assisted them with their work. I made sure to implement peer work for certain assignments to encourage the individual. When students start to show low academic performance or display a lack of social interaction, teachers need to get involved (OCD at School | Anxiety and Depression Association of America, ADAA, n.d.). A team of professionals can support the student by creating strategies and a plan to further their development. Regular meetings should be implemented. In the classroom, a teacher can use an objective within routine matrix method by giving learning opportunities within the classroom’s daily schedule (Cook et al., 2020). This can help guide the classroom teachers on how to interact with the individual. With any disability, educators should generate methods on how to support the student appropriately.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

For the purpose of this assignment, I have chosen to concentrate on obsessive-compulsive disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable reoccurring thoughts, obsessions, and/or behaviors that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over. (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, n.d.) Obsessive-compulsive disorder can affect both children and adults. Some common obsessions a person may experience are excessive eating, excessive hand washing, a constant need to arrange and rearrange things in a particular matter, repeatedly checking on things, or compulsively counting. They may also experience intrusive thoughts. While these obsessions can be found in people who do not have OCD, a person who does have OCD will find that they cannot control their thoughts or behaviors, spending at least 1 hour per day on them. (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, n.d.) Another indicator of OCD is that the person does not feel pleasure while performing such rituals, however, they may feel a brief sense of relief. Most notably, these obsessions and rituals become a huge distraction to their daily lives.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder may present itself in students in various ways. Teachers may notice students asking the same question multiple times, erasing, and rewriting their schoolwork often, re-reading passages, or tapping things in an unusual way. They may also notice the student washing their hands excessively. (Lyness, 2021) These behaviors are often extreme, and it is believed that in doing so, these behaviors will prevent bad things from happening. (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Children | CDC, 2020) Behaviors are known to change and evolve over time with the child, although they can also remain the same. There are various treatment options for obsessive-compulsive disorder, the most popular being therapy

Speech or language impairment: language impairment
Language impairments are “disorders of language that interfere with communication,
adversely affect performance and/or functioning in the student’s typical learning environment,
and result in the need for exceptional student education. A Language impairment is defined as a
disorder in one or more of the basic learning processes involved in understanding or in using
spoken or written language” (Solodev). These include phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics and pragmatics. Language deals with meaning and it refers to “a while system of
words and symbols- written, spoke, or expressed with gestures and body language- that is used to
communicate meaning” (Koslo, 2021).
Children with language impairment/disorder may struggle to understand the meaning of
what’s being said. Children will also have a difficult time with receptive or expressive language
which leads to having difficulty communicating or expressing their thoughts. A child with
language impairment may also struggle to put words together and understand the meaning of
what is being said by other people. “The language impairment may manifest in significant
difficulties affecting listening comprehension, oral expression, social interaction, reading,
writing, or spelling” (Solodev).
Children with language impairment will benefit by receiving language therapy from a
speech-language therapist. Some of classroom accommodations/modifications for language
impairments will be by providing copy of class notes, giving assignments bother orally and
written, allowing extended time for assignments and tests, pre-teach words/ideas before using
them in a real situation and providing children with graphic organizers.
