Midterm Project

Due: 3/12/23

Answer the following questions, which build upon one another. Your answers should be robust, including examples or illustrations, and should be thoroughly explained in your own words.

Part 1. Choose any one of the seven senses (e.g., hearing). Describe three (3) ways that this sense helps you in being successful in three (3) different areas of your life (e.g., work, school, friendship, hobbies, etc.). For each area of your life, you should have 3 tasks in which your chosen sense is helpful. This means you should have a total of nine (9) points. See the example diagram below:

Sense: Hearing

The three tasks should be specific and you should explain how it is related to success. You may list them in a graphic or simply as bullet points 1, 2, and 3. That is up to you!

Part 2. If this sense did not work correctly, discuss three (3) potential negative outcomes that could happen in your present life. Discuss which parts of the brain and which neurotransmitters might be involved and why. Be specific and thorough.

CHECKLIST: Optional Review by 2/12/23

□ Choose a sense □ Potential negative outcome #1
□ Life Area #1 □ Potential negative outcome #2
□ How is this sense related to success in this area? □ Potential negative outcome #3
□ Three tasks for Life Area #1 □ Describe parts of the brain involved in chosen sense
□ Life Area #2

□ How is this sense related to success in this area?

□ Explain how these brain structures are involved
□ Three tasks for Life Area #2 □ Which neurotransmitters are involved? Why?
□ Life Area #3

□ How is this sense related to success in this area?

□ Three tasks for Life Area #3

Part 3. Using your three areas of life (e.g., work, hobby, parenting, school, marriage, etc.), design an integrated scenario in which you will apply the concepts of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning:

  1. Provide a brief narrative of each scenario. For example, for work I might say, “Monday morning I got to work at 8:00…”Forhobby I might say, “I bought a new pattern to make a shirt…” and for parenting I might say, “My son doesn’t like to complete his chores…”Each narrative should include Classical Conditioning, one specific type of Operant Conditioning, and Observational Learning.
  2. Explain how each narrative scenario includes Classical Conditioning by identifying the following:
    1. Unconditioned Stimulus
    2. Unconditioned Response
    3. Conditioned Stimulus
    4. Conditioned Response
  3. Explain how each narrative scenario include Operant Conditioning by identifying the following:
    1. The Target Behavior
    2. The Consequence
    3. Whether it is Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, or Negative Punishment

Please note: Each of your three scenarios should use a different type of Operant Conditioning so that you can display a clear understanding of each one.

  1. Explain how each narrative scenario includes Observational Learning by identifying the following:
    1. The Model
    2. What Was Learned
    3. The Motivation

CHECKLIST: Optional Review by 2/26/23

Scenario for Life Area #1
□ Narrative; includes all three types of learning □ Identify Target Behavior, Consequence, Type of Operant Conditioning
□ Explain how it shows Classical Conditioning □ Explain how it shows Observational Learning
□ Identify US, UR, CS, & CR □ Identify Model, Learned Behavior, Motivation
□ Explain how it shows Operant Conditioning

Scenario for Life Area #2
□ Narrative; includes all three types of learning □ Identify Target Behavior, Consequence, Type of Operant Conditioning
□ Explain how it shows Classical Conditioning □ Explain how it shows Observational Learning
□ Identify US, UR, CS & CR □ Identify Model, Learned Behavior, Motivation
□ Explain how it shows Operant Conditioning

Scenario for Life Area #3
□ Narrative; includes all three types of learning □ Identify Target Behavior, Consequence, Type of Operant Conditioning
□ Explain how it shows Classical Conditioning □ Explain how it shows Observational Learning
□ Identify US, UR, CS & CR □ Identify Model, Learned Behavior, Motivation
□ Explain how it shows Operant Conditioning

Part 4: The Reflection

Reflect on the changes that you have experienced in coming to college in the three areas of your life listed in Part 1. In a 1-page essay, consider how these things changed for you when you became a college student. Your reflection must include:

  • Intrinsic Motivation and Extrinsic Motivation
  • Any other theory of motivation (other than intrinsic and extrinsic motivation)
  • Any theory of emotion
  • Any information on the biology of hunger, eating, or eating disorders.
