In this assessment task, you will be required to read and understand the below-mentioned scenario and complete the following activities.
This assessment task requires you to work effectively as part of project-based teams for an information technology department. You are required to read and understand a predetermined issue and/or situation and participate in a number of assessment activities. You need to complete the following activities:
- Activity 1: Define and assess proposed solutions
- Activity 2: Assess organisational readiness and define transition requirements
- Activity 3: Verify and validate solutions
This assessment task will be completed at your workplace, online or in a simulated workplace environment prepared by your training organisation.
The student is required to read and understand a predetermined issue and/or situation and participate in the following assessment activities.
The predetermined issue and/or situation
You have started working in the ICT department of your organisation.
You are having a number of issues with your current infrastructure and ICT environment, especially when one server fails and a number of people lose access to the applications installed on the server. Other problems are explained in the text below.
Your organisation is currently using virtual machines (VMs) to run software applications on top of the physical servers to emulate a particular hardware system. Hypervisor or a virtual machine monitor, can be a software, firmware or hardware that is used to create and run virtual machines. Each virtual machine has its own guest operating system. VMs of different operating systems can coexist on the same physical server—for example, a UNIX VM can coexist with a Linux VM. Each VM has its own binaries, libraries, and applications, and the VM can be several gigabytes in size. Each VM has its own operating system image, that contributes to the memory and storage footprint. As it turned out, this problem complicates every stage of the software development lifecycle, from development to testing to production and disaster recovery. This strategy also severely restricts device portability between public clouds, private clouds, and conventional data centres.
You and your team have been researching the solutions and identified that containers can be a perfect way to overcome the current challenges your organisation is facing.
Containers run on top of a physical server and its host operating system, such as Linux or Windows. Each container shares the host OS kernel as well as, in most cases, binaries and libraries. Components that are shared are read-only. Containers are therefore extremely “light”—they are just a few megabytes in size and start up in seconds, as opposed to gigabytes and minutes for a VM.
Containers also help to minimise management costs. Since they share the same operating system, only one operating system needs attention and feeding for bug fixes, updates, and so on. This definition is close to that of hypervisor hosts: fewer management points but a significantly larger fault domain. In short, containers are smaller and more compact than virtual machines.
Virtual machines and containers differ in many ways, but the primary distinction is that containers enable the virtualisation of an operating system, allowing multiple workloads to run on a single OS instance. The hardware is virtualized with VMs in order to run several OS instances. Containers, with their speed, agility, and portability, are yet another tool that can help streamline software development.
Container orchestration is the process of automating most of the organisational work needed to operate containerised workloads and services. This involves a wide range of tasks required by software teams to handle the lifecycle of a container, such as provisioning, deployment, scaling (up and down), networking, load balancing, and more.

- All Internet data composed, distributed, and/or obtained by company’s> computer systems is considered to be company’s> property and is accepted as part of its official data. As a result, it could be disclosed for legal purposes or to other relevant third parties.
- The devices, services, and technologies used to access the Internet are the property of the company, and the company reserves the right to track Internet traffic as well as data composed, submitted, or received through its online connections.
- Emails sent via the company email system do not contain any offensive content. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of derogatory or harassing language or photographs.
- All pages and downloads may be controlled and/or blocked by the company if they are considered to be harmful and/or ineffective for business.

Activity context
In this assessment activity, you will be required to define and assess proposed solutions based on the information provided in the scenario.
You will be required to understand your own responsibilities, responsibilities of your team members, articulate team structure and plan and prioritise your own tasks according to the given time frames and team requirements.
The task requires you to prepare yourself to:
- Assess potential solutions in light of business requirements.
- Identify and evaluate solution options and additional capabilities to insure they fulfil stakeholder needs.
- Rank solution options based on their business value and the benefits and drawbacks of options.
- Allocate specifications to solution components to maximise business value.
- Allow for the assignment of requirements to a particular project release, phase, or iteration.
You must ask stakeholders open and closed probing questions and actively listen to clarify your doubts and consultations.All questions asked should be related to the task requirements specified above. You must record all the questions asked in the appropriate sections allocated for this purpose.
