The learning resources in the Walden Library are available to students to help them find articles and evidence-based research on any topic of their choosing (Walden University, n.d.). One of the ways a student can search for articles is by utilizing one of the many databases available on the Walden Library website. After browsing a few databases, I chose to utilize the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database to find articles related to the care of the transgender population. I chose this database because I wanted to find an article that had a link to the full text of the article, not just the abstract. The article I ultimately found, which had been published in the Nephrology Nursing Journal in 2021, was a review of another article originally published by the American Journal of Nursing. The article, titled Care for the Transgender and Gender-Diverse Populations, discusses the importance of culturally-competent care of the transgender population as well as offers resources for creating more gender-inclusive policies with regard to nursing care (Robbins, 2021).
The difficulties I initially encountered were mostly related to the topic itself. I was not able to find many articles that involved studies or reviews of evidenced-based care of transgender populations within the United States. Many of the articles were based on information from Europe or other countries or were highly specific to a particular topic. After reviewing the Database Skills modules on the Walden website, I was able to apply those tips to adjust my search. Once I began finding articles, the next hurdle was that I was having difficulty finding articles that were full-text. Switching to the CINAHL Plus with Full-Text database alleviated this issue.
After finding and reviewing the article I began to explore more of the options on the database page and found that I could choose additional databases to search using the ‘Choose Databases’ feature at the top of the page. In doing so, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is also an LGBTQ+ Source database. I added that database to the CINAHL search and immediately went from 486 articles to 617 articles. Additionally, I found an option on the left column of the page to narrow down my search to just articles in the United States. Checking this box narrowed my search down to 329 articles. (Walden University, n.d.).
The Walden Library database webpage was very useful in identifying databases that are applicable to finding the subject matter I am looking for. I found the CINAHL Plus with Full-Text database to be highly useful, especially when searching for options that contain full text. CINAHL, which stands for the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), is a database specifically related to Nursing and is one of the most comprehensive databases available.
