Lutresha,

If I was Mr. William and had to answer questions posted by Wanda’s parents, I would, first of all, by thanking them for being concerned about their daughter’s performance on the aptitude test and the achievement test. I would also thank them for showing interest in their daughter’s education.

I would explain to Wanda’s parents what each test represents and how the percentage is established.  I would inform them that both tests are testing on two different perspectives. According to Popham (2020) a percentile compares a student’s score with those of other students in a norm group.  This means that Wanda scored better than sixty-five percent of the students that took the test. I would let them know that Wanda’s test scores will help me to recognize her progress in my classroom.

I would explain the aptitude test to Wanda’s parents. Being that Wanda scored in the 90 percentile indicates that she actually scored higher than 90 percent of the students who took the test. Wanda scoring in the 90 percentile shows me that want is capable of doing whatever she wants to do in whatever career field she may choose.

I will be gladly to let Wanda’s parents know that she is headed for success. I will encourage them to continue to show interest in Wanda’s education and to also keep her encourage.

Courtney,

This chapter really helped me understand the difference between the two tests. I never fully understood what they meant and why they were given. I would start by explaining the difference between these tests and their purpose to the parents. Since I was a parent before I was in the education field, I understand being worried about how your child scored and why. I would also worry that I had failed my child in some way if he had not scored high in a certain area.

As the teacher. I would explain to the parents that the aptitude test predicts the success of the student in the future and the standardized test shows what they have been taught and the knowledge they have successfully obtained. Since one is showing the results of where we stand today and the other shows what we should know in the future, they are both very important.

After explaining the importance of each of these tests, I would also explain to the parents where their child placed in these tests and give them advice on how to help their child in the future if there was any area the student was lacking in. Mostly, I would reassure them that we will all work together to ensure that their child is prepared for the future.

This chapter taught me a lot about standardized testing. There are a variety of ways that standardized tests are interpreted and I believe it is so useful for educators to understand them to better help their students and parents as well.  I would begin by explaining to Wanda’s parents the difference between the aptitude test and the achievement test. The aptitude test will be used to interpret what the student has the potential to achieve. While the achievement test interprets what the student has already been taught and should know. I would then explain that teacher’s score students based on mastery level of the standard or subject they are studying. Based on our text, standardized test students relatively, this means that a student’s scores are tested stacked up against other students who are either currently testing or have tested before (Popham,2019). Next, I would tell Wanda’s parents that Wanda’s tests are being graded based on percentile. This means that in a norm group (which means a group of students who have already taken the test), she scored 90 percent higher (Popham, 2019). I would clarify that both the aptitude and achievement tests are great resources for us as educators to better help Wanda achieve her academic goals. I would encourage them to understand that although these tests were scored through percentile averages, that there are various other ways that the standardized tests can be graded. Finally, I would continue to reassure them that I will be here if they have any questions and to gladly help interpret any future scores.
