Organizing and Structuring the Essay:

While writing your essay follow the general essay format of  introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction: The introduction of a rhetorical analysis essay introduces the topic, including the name of the work that you’re responding to and the author. It also states your thesis and the author’s thesis along with a brief summary of the work.

Main Body Section: The body of a rhetorical analysis essay contains information that supports your position on the topic.

Develop your paragraphs using analysis that evaluates the work.

Directly follow each evidence with analysis. Support your statements with quotaions (use sparingly – one quote for each body paragraph – 1 sentence only) from the original essay.

Use the MLA format of citation – use paragraph numbers when using a direct quote or paraphrase.

Provide a Works Cited page.

Use paragraphs for each point you analyze and include transitions from point to point to  improve the flow of your essay.

Check to see that the entire essay is well organized and that the information within each paragraph is well ordered.

Conclusion: The conclusion of your critical essay restates your position and summarizes how your evidence supports your point of view. Remember to restate the title and author of the work in the conclusion.

Remember to proofread your essay. Mechanical errors (spelling, grammar, punctuation) erase your credibility as an expert on your topic.

Include a Works Cited page
