Over the years in my nursing journey, I have had to read a lot about Florence Nightingale as she was a pinnacle in making nursing a respectable career. One area of her amazing leadership skills that were new(ish) to me that has changed my understanding of her important contributions to nursing, was her drive to inspire and make a change in this field even after becoming bedridden with the Crimean fever after saving so many lives. (“Week 2 Lesson: The Nightingale Years,” 2022) Nightingale was able to still make a change and provide incredible insight into the future of nursing from her own home. “Despite her illness, she continued to write prolifically.” (Glasper, 2020, p.235) Nightingale’s work would then go on to be used as the first nursing textbook that would shape the future of nurse training all over the world.
The important thing that I take away from this and her leadership is just how unique and diverse nursing is. It is so moving that as a nurse you are able to make a positive impact on the lives of people, not just at the bedside but from research, and training as well. My work currently has me in the ED, but I know I will not always be in that department. I hope to go on and work as a PMHNP and work towards ways to make a difference in the lives of others who suffer from mental health.
