The American Indian Experience

Unlike previous chapters that spoke about immigrating groups, such as Irish, Italians, and Jews, we learn in this chapter about a different racial/ethnic experience: colonization. Colonization involves the conquest and domination of a preexisting geographical group by outsiders. The American Indian experience is one of colonization by an external group and also of resistance to that process.

Please answer the following questions:

1) What have been some consequences for American Indians of being made a colonized people? Please give examples.

2) How does a “white racial frame” persist today, particularly in terms of the cultural representations of Native American peoples? Here think about how Native American images are used in sports, for example.
