The nurses association that I feel is the most important in my field of nursing is AWHONN (association of women’s health, obstetrics, and neonatal nurses). AWHONN’s mission statement is, “To empower and support nurses caring for women, newborns, and their families through research, education, and advocacy.” Being a member of AWHONN has a lot of benefits. Some of them include receiving semi-monthly journals on up-to-date practices, ability to attend state/chapter meetings, and get discounts on CE offerings and discounts at multiple colleges. The membership cost varies between $60-$216 a year depending on the benefits that the applicant would want to receive from the association. I was previously a member of this organization and I feel that I learned a lot from being a part of such an amazing association. I would say that in the future I will rejoin the organization because even just receiving the journals that come along with the membership really helps to keep up on important changes that occur in the women’s health field. My facility attempts to follow the AWHONN guidelines for nursing care/patient ratios. All hospitals obviously have moments where they are unable to sustain the perfect guidelines, but it is at least considered when making patient assignments. According to Simpson (2019), “Hospitals with annual birth volumes in the 500–999 range compared to hospitals with 2500 or more annual births were significantly more likely to be perceived as compliant with AWHONN staffing guidelines.” I work at a hospital that is on the medium range of births per year and I feel like bigger hospitals have an easier time complying with AWHONN guidelines.

NANN- National Association of Neonatal Nurses mission is the professional voice that shapes neonatal nursing through excellence in practice, education, research, and professional development. Some benefits of being a member include free CEUs, exclusive discounts on products and publications, access to the bimonthly journal, and discounts on specialty meetings such as the annual conference. NANN has several membership levels. For students, the cost is $50; E-member costs $99; retired cost is $80; regular member cost is $150; international membership cost $170. I do plan on joining this organization. This organization has many benefits that will enhance my professional development, including a bimonthly journal, an e-newsletter, and educational, networking and training resources.

Beal et al. “Professional nursing organizations and associations have a long history of promoting leadership development of their members and exist at international and national levels. Most were established for and continue to work toward a variety of purposes, including advocating for the profession of nursing and nurses, developing health care policies and standards that ensure the highest level of patient care quality, assuring the highest level of education, providing professional development and continuing education, and providing research, networking, and career advancement opportunities for a collective body of nurse members”.  NANN and my facility both have a similar mission: to improve the care of human life through education and professional development.
