There are many products or services any number of people would argue are not good for society. Saying that “a company should produce and sell any product as long as there is a market for it” does not consider the affects on the people of this world. Smoking and drinking are obviously not only harmful for the person participating in the drug but can also be dangerous for those around the person smoking or drinking. Many people are now against guns and anything that uses fossil fuels.
Notably the producers of products that have a market but are bad for society often have to pay a price to consumers for their choice. Many times, this has been due to false advertising, or knowingly putting people in danger, as in the case of smoking. Recently Juul, a brand of electronic cigarettes, paid a settlement of $439 million for marketing to teens (McGinley, 2022). Prior to Juul’s electronic Cigarettes, nicotine usage had been steadily declining among teens in the US, but in 2019 a study found that over 40% of high school seniors had vaped in the past 12 months (Overbeek, et al, 2020) . While vaping does not have the same level of danger as traditional cigarettes, or the same second-hand effects on bystanders, it is still a risky endeavor, especially for teens.
Not everything is good to participate in, and therefore not everything is good to produce. As Paul said, “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others” (New International Version, 2011, 1 Corinthians 10:23-24). Just because something is permissible, does not mean it should be done. A company should not produce or sell any product as long as there is a market for it. Companies should produce things that are good, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable, as it says in Philippians 4:8 of the New Living Translation (2011).
