Statement of Purpose

My friends call me the “therapist friend.” Anytime someone needs to talk, I am always ready and listening. I give advice as best I can and do my best to encourage any person I encounter. I am very understanding no matter the situation, I have always had a passion for helping people in any way possible. I would like to say that my skills have led me to pursue the profession. The UT Tyler Graduate program will provide me with the opportunity to learn more about my major and have hands on experience in the psychology field. It will teach me how to become the best counselor I can be while working alongside top professionals in the field.

Working towards my Master’s degree will allow new doors of endless possibilities to open for me. I believe the program will allow me to be a voice for my community and a voice for the youth. My professional goals are to learn as much as I can to strengthen my knowledge about the field and prepare me for the future.  I’ve always dreamt of becoming a therapist, helping the youth, and having my own office. My goals are to also be an advocate for mental health awareness and teach as many people as I can that it is okay to need help or someone to talk to. I believe my past and current experiences have prepared me to start my journey into counseling.

My undergraduate degree helped get me to the door, my masters will help me get in. The classes I took gave me an understanding into how the mind works, different ways to identify stressors, disorders, and treatments. My previous professors gave me a taste of what to expect for the field and helped mold me. I see myself as the therapist I always wanted in life. I always pretend with my friends and family that I am a counselor and have them come into my “office,” the living room couch to be more specific. If I am accepted into the program, I will be head over hills and grateful to start the next step to becoming the counselor I needed when I was in high school.
