I work at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City, Alabama. The hospital is located at 3316 Highway 280 West, Alexander City, Alabama 35010. The website is www.russellcares.com . Russell Medical provides inpatient and outpatient care. The mission statement is simple: “Being the best because we care.” Russell Medical Center is a stand alone not for profit organization, meaning it is not owned. It is governed by a board of directors that is made up of three physicians and six community members. The hospital serves on average around 145 per month. The facility is licensed for 81 beds, but it is staffed for 40. The maximum occupancy rate daily now is 38.
Russell Medical Center has several departments. They include Total Fitness which provides rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy) and fitness services. Another department is labor and delivery, delivering the only babies within the five adjacent counties at an average of 380 babies a year. The cardio-pulmonary department provides diagnostic services that include echocardiograms, cardiac stress tests, and metabolic stress tests, along with a catherization laboratory. RMC also offers diagnostic imagining and radiology with GE Revolution 256- slice CT, closed bone MRI, digital mammography, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, PACS, PET, ultrasound, and varian linear accelerator. Russell Medical opened the doors of its Cancer Center in 2001, partnering with University of Alabama at Birmingham to offer targeted chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The Emergency Department provides 24 hour care with 12 private rooms, 2 trauma rooms, helicopter pad, and electronic patient tracking system. RMC has six bed ICU and a 10 bed step down unit for those not sick enough to be in the ICU. The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine department provides debridement, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, dressing selection for people with non-healing and chronic wounds. Russell Medical Center does provide charity care. Last year RMC provided $14 million in community benefits that included providing athletic trainers and nurses to the Alexander City School System. Russell Medical Center does not receive subsidies from local, state, or federal. However, they did receive Covid money as did all other hospitals, but that was anomaly.
